Just because the weather cools down this fall doesn’t mean your outdoor fitness routine has to.
Autumn brings out some of the most popular walks, runs and rides in south-Central Indiana. October’s Hilly Hundred wouldn’t have quite the same punch in August—unless you count the humidity.
And many of this season’s events bring awareness and dollars to a number of causes and charities.
Think of it as getting fit for a cause. A way to raise money—and your heart rate. Here’s a look at the next two months.
SEPT.
Ellettsville Dollars for
Scholars 5K Run and walk
When: 8:30 a.m.
Location: Edgewood Middle School, 851 W. Edgewood Drive, Ellettsville

Hoosiers Outrun Cancer
When: 7:30-9 a.m. registration, material pick-up; opening ceremony 9:50 a.m.
Location: Indiana University Memorial Stadium, 1001 E. 17th St., Bloomington
Description: The Bloomington Hospital Foundation’s annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer features a 5K run/walk, 1-mile family walk and a 1-mile competitive kids’ run — all to raise money for the hospital’s Olcott Center for Cancer Education.

Mitchell Persimmon 5K Run and Walk
When: Registration 7:30 a.m.;
race 8:30 a.m.
Location: Mitchell High School,
1000 Bishop Blvd.
Description: Entry fee for early registration until Sept. 23 is $18; day of race is $20. Proceeds go to local chamber of commerce for future persimmon festivals.

Brown County Hills Challenge
When: 7-8 a.m.
Location: Saturday - CYO Camp Rancho Framasa, 2230 Clay Lick Road, Brown County; Sunday - Gatesville Country Store, 4525 Salt Creek Road, Brown County
Description: Organizers are calling it the toughest ride in the midwest with 25-, 40-, 50-mile routes and leisure starts. Lunch included 12-4 p.m. Cost is $25 for Saturday only or $22 for Sunday only; both rides $42 and camping costs.
The fees help raise money for scholarships for graduating seniors from Brown County High School from middle class families who are not eligible for federal or state aid and for non-traditional adult students returning to an Indiana state college or university.

Lawrence County Bike Tour
When: 1 p.m.
Location: Bedford
Description: The fifth annual ride for the Limestone Girls Club allows cyclists to choose from five different distances for all experience levels.

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk
When: 9 a.m.
Location: Ivy Tech Community College, 200 Daniels Way, Bloomington
Description: Sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The goals are to have 500 walkers, 100 cancer survivors and to raise $35,000 — to be used for breast cancer research, education, advocacy, programs and services.

Bloomington’s Breast
Cancer Awareness Walk

Description: The walk is free, but donations are accepted. Donations in excess of walk expenses will go to local cancer outreach and education programs.

Pedal For Peace
When: 4 p.m.
Location: Major Taylor Velodrome, 3649 Cold Spring Road, Indianapolis
Description: Pedal for Peace is a collaborative, inter-faith fundraiser with a 6-hour bicycle relay for all experience levels.
This year’s proceeds will go to Mar Elias Academic Institution. Mar Elias, located in northern Israel, seeks to be a world-class university of peace in the Middle East.

Jill Behrman 5K Run/Walk, 10th Anniversary Race
When: 8:30-9:40 a.m. on-site registration, 10 a.m. race, 10:10 a.m. one-mile walk
Location: Indiana University Memorial Stadium, 1001 E. 17th St., Bloomington
Description: Proceeds benefit both Jill’s House and the Jill Behrman Emerging Leader Scholarship.
