Hop on your bike and pedal the path once taken by Martinsville hometown hero John Wooden. Wooden, the Hall of Fame college basketball coach, lived in Morgan County and wound his way to and from school in what is now marked for others to follow. Thanks to Elmer Reynolds, childhood friend of the legendary basketball coach, the route can be retraced. Plenty of signs designate it the Johnny Wooden Interurban Parkway, a train passage that a young Wooden took from Centerton to Martinsville more than 80 years ago.
This 9-mile route runs from near Poe Brothers in Mooresville down south along Ind. 67 and some county roads.
Ride the trail and map your own route.
Reynolds said the markers are part of a larger plan for the area to honor Wooden. Another phase will focus on Wooden’s love of education.
